“Tea Up” to Stop Strokes

Drinking lots of  black or green tea may lower your risk of stroke, according to research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in San Diego, Calif., earlier this year.  That’s especially good news if you have diabetes, since people with the condition are twice as likely to suffer a stroke as those who don’t have diabetes.

High blood sugar levels can increase fatty deposits in the blood and cause clogging and hardening of the blood vessels.  Experts say anti-oxidants and other substances in tea appear to reverse this process, therby warding of strokes.

A multi-study review of 195,000 adults found that people who drink three or more cups of black or green tea daily had a 21% lower risk of stroke as compared with people who drank one cup or less.  Just be sure to skip the buttered crumpets!
